How this is calculated
amount financed = price - trade-in - down payment i = (annual rate / 100) / periods per year n = months / 12 x periods per year payment = amount financed x i / (1 - (1 + i)^-n)
Trade-in allowance and down payment both reduce the balance before interest is applied, so they lower the payment dollar for dollar. The term you pick in months is converted to periods using the payment frequency, which is monthly by default because most equipment paper is written monthly.
Total interest is the sum of the interest portions of every payment. Total cost including trade-in and down payment adds the value you handed over at signing to the payments you will make, which is the honest way to compare two deals with different structures.
Assumptions: fixed rate, no balloon or residual at the end, no documentation or filing fees, and no sales tax financed into the balance. This calculator does not model leases, and it gives no tax guidance — depreciation and deduction questions belong with your accountant.
